Why Transparent Product Images Matter

Marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart, Etsy, and Google Shopping require or strongly prefer product images on white or transparent backgrounds. A transparent PNG gives you maximum flexibility — drop it onto any background color in your ad creatives, catalog pages, or social posts without awkward white boxes.

When this tool works well

This tool is designed for product photos taken in a controlled studio setting — plain white, grey, or solid-color backdrop with consistent, diffused lighting. Lightbox photography, seamless paper sweeps, and flat-lay setups all produce excellent results with minimal tolerance adjustment.

When to reshoot instead

Busy, patterned, or gradient backgrounds cannot be removed by flood-fill. Similarly, photos with harsh shadows, reflective surfaces (glass, chrome), or very fine edges (hair, fur, mesh fabric) will need a professional masking service or manual editing. For those, reshooting on a plain backdrop is faster than trying to fix the image in post.

Tips for cleaner source photos

Light from above and both sides. Two softboxes at 45° with an overhead fill eliminates most shadow edges that confuse background removal.

Use a seamless white sweep. A large roll of seamless paper or a proper lightbox creates the uniform background this algorithm removes most cleanly.

Keep distance between product and backdrop. If the product touches the backdrop, shadow and product edge merge. A 30–50 cm gap keeps the background color consistent all the way to the image border.

Shoot in RAW and export to PNG. JPEG compression introduces color artifacts near edges, increasing the tolerance you need to set and sometimes erasing product detail. A PNG export from a RAW file gives the cleanest cutout.

Check at actual size. A cutout that looks perfect at thumbnail can have a visible halo at full resolution. After downloading, zoom to 100% in your image editor to verify edge quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work on colored backgrounds, not just white?
Yes — the tool removes any solid, uniform background color. It samples border pixels to detect the color automatically, then flood-fills from the image edges inward. Solid grey, beige, light blue, or any flat studio backdrop will work well. It won't work on patterned, gradient, or complex backgrounds.
Will this work on photos with shadows?
Soft shadows are difficult — shadow pixels blend between the product color and background, often falling within the tolerance range and getting partially or fully erased. For best results, use flat even lighting with no visible shadows. If you need to keep a shadow, lower the tolerance slider.
Why is part of my product being removed?
The tolerance is likely too high. Lower the slider. Note that the flood-fill only erases background pixels connected to the image border — a white product detail in the centre of the frame won't be removed even at high tolerance, because it is not connected to the edge.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All processing runs entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device — nothing is uploaded to any server, and nothing is sent to any AI model or external service. The tool works fully offline after the page loads.
